JA Story is a landmark musical. The show is a historical and original musical, set before the arrival of Christopher Columbos on the shores of Jamaica in 1494 through to independence in 1962.
The show recreates key events in Jamaica’s history and other worldwide influences that helped shape this remarkable island. this is a passionate story, set against exceptional set of circumstances and people, backboned by many different styles of music and a diversity of dances. Not forgetting the many customs and rituals brought to the island by the people of India, Africa, Britain, Africa, Syria and China to name a few.
The haul of gold medals by Jamaican athletes at the 2008 Summer Olympics brought the island to the attention of many world over. Some five centuries ago, the snatching of gold (other people’s) by the Jamaican based Buccaneer Henry Morgan, resulted in the farmers’s son from Wales becoming the Lieutenant Governor in 1673. At this junction of her history, Jamaica’s profile was worldwide.
It’s part of the island physique to rise above great adversity in many different ways. JA story recreates the circumstances that would propel Folk hero (Cudjoe) and leader of the runaway to name fame. He famously signed a Peace Treaty in 1739, with the British which allowed the Maroons to live harmoniously on the island. Throught hte centuries other national heroes would follow and bear the prefix “The Right Excellency” in front of their names. Step forward Marcus Gavey, Paul Bogle, George William Gordon, the female slave warrior Nanny, Norman Manley, Alexander Bustamante and Sam Sharp, whose actions are all documented in this musical stage production. Joining the illustrious list is the honorable Robert Nestor Marley. The production also highlights the contribution of Ian Fleming and Noel Coward to Jamaican life and history.
