Caribscan Diagnostic Imaging Company, Montserrat
Caribscan, is a diagnostic imaging company, that reduces the need for people on the Island of Montserrat to travel abroad to receive medical scans.
Ms Sonia Charles, founder of Caribscan, a Clinical Specialist Sonographer, is proud to provide services that contribute to the improvement of the Montserrat Health Care system.
Women’s Health
“My greatest desire is to provide quality and foremost basic primary level care to residents,” explained Ms. Charles, who is also a University instructor in sonography. “Being able to have an ultrasound when a problem first surfaces, can reduce the anxiety level of patients and assist doctors in diagnosing illness. I have found that many people neglect their health because they don’t want to travel off island because of high costs and the waiting involved in knowing what is going on in their body.”
Caribscan provides a range of medical scans including abdominal, kidney, urinary bladder, thyroid, breast, pelvic and vascular examinations. A range of Breast cancer awareness initiatives were undertaken during 2009 and a similar programme has been arranged for 2010.
Men’s Health
Caribscan provides a range of medical scans including abdominal, kidney and urinary bladder, thyroid, breast, uterus, ovary examinations and mammography. There are also services designed for men between the ages of 65-75 years for abdominal aorta aneurysms.” There are ongoing health promotion activities and workshops to encourage men in this age range to register at their local clinics, where they can access information, advice and guidance about this problem. A series of workshops for doctors and nurses at St. John’s Hospital have been arranged to raise awareness and promote understanding amongst the local population about aortic aneurysms and how sonography can help with diagnosing patients who are at risk.

Sonia, is a Clinical Specialist Radiographer/Sonographer and a national of Montserrat. She worked at Glendon Hospital in the late 1980s before traveling abroad to further her studies. She has worked across the Caribbean region, Saudi Arabia, Arizona and the United Kingdom. Ms. Charles is also a university instructor in sonography and her research has been published in the Journal of Nutrition and the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
