Every year on 22 June, the United Kingdom marks Windrush Day — a moment to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of the Windrush Generation and reflect on the enduring legacy they have left on British society.
At RAFFA International Development Agency, Windrush Day is more than a date in the calendar. It represents history, identity, resilience, and the continued importance of standing alongside communities whose contributions have helped shape modern Britain.
The Legacy of the Windrush Generation
The arrival of HMT Empire Windrush in 1948 symbolised the beginning of a new chapter in British history. Thousands of Caribbean men and women answered Britain’s call to help rebuild the country following the Second World War. Many worked tirelessly within the NHS, transport services, manufacturing industries, education, and public services.
Their hard work, culture, values, entrepreneurship and community spirit transformed the social and cultural fabric of the UK.
Today, the influence of the Windrush Generation can be seen across every area of British life — from music and literature to healthcare, business, faith organisations and public leadership.
RAFFA’s Commitment to Supporting Windrush Communities
For many years, RAFFA has worked to support, celebrate and advocate for members of the Windrush Generation and their families.
Our work has included:
Supporting awareness around the Windrush Compensation Scheme
Assisting individuals affected by the Windrush scandal
Supporting community events and cultural celebrations
Working alongside community organisations and advocacy groups
Helping amplify the voices of those impacted by injustice
RAFFA has also helped signpost individuals to support services and information relating to the Windrush Compensation Scheme, ensuring communities understand their rights and know where to access help.
Celebrating Culture Through Community
One of the highlights of RAFFA’s Windrush engagement has been supporting cultural events that bring generations together.
Events such as “The Big Caribbean Lunch” in Brixton have created opportunities for storytelling, celebration, music, food and remembrance — honouring Windrush elders while also educating younger generations about the importance of preserving Caribbean heritage and history.
Community celebrations are essential because they remind us that Windrush history is British history.
Reflecting on the Windrush Scandal
While Windrush Day is a celebration, it is also important to acknowledge the injustice experienced by many individuals during the Windrush scandal.
Families who had lived in the UK for decades were wrongly denied healthcare, housing, employment and legal status. Some faced detention or deportation despite having every right to remain in the country.
RAFFA continues to support awareness efforts surrounding the Windrush Compensation Scheme and advocates for dignity, fairness and justice for all affected individuals.
Check out our 'Over the Years Video' which highlights the support and activities undertaken by RAFFA in support of the Windrush Generation as we approach our 20th anniversary.
Looking Ahead
As we commemorate Windrush Day 2026, we also look toward the future.
RAFFA remains committed to:
Preserving Windrush stories and heritage
Supporting intergenerational learning
Promoting equality and social justice
Empowering Black and Caribbean communities
Building partnerships that strengthen communities across the UK
The story of Windrush is one of courage, sacrifice, perseverance and hope. It is a story that deserves to be remembered, protected and celebrated for generations to come.
