Today we honour the life and enduring legacy of Lord Herman Ousley, a tireless advocate for equality and justice. His unwavering commitment to fighting racial discrimination and promoting social inclusion was not just his professional endeavor but his profound calling—a beacon of hope and change.

Born in 1945, Lord Ousley embarked on a journey that would see him become one of the most respected and influential figures in the crusade for racial equality. As Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality from 1993 to 2000, he spearheaded initiatives to confront racial biases, promoting the importance of multiculturalism and equal opportunities. His visionary leadership in this role was pivotal, setting a precedent for policies that aimed to bridge the gaps of inequality in the UK.

His passion for community engagement extended beyond governmental roles. Lord Ousley founded “Kick It Out,” an organisation dedicated to eradicating racism in football, which blossomed under his guidance into a crucial platform for advocacy within sports. Additionally, his involvement with community-based projects, like the Reach Society, contributed significantly to the empowerment of young individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Throughout his life, Lord Ousley received numerous accolades, reflecting his contributions and impact. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and later, a life peer as Baron Ouseley of Peckham Rye in 2001. These honors underscored his lifelong dedication to social justice, equality, and community transformation.

My journey with Lord Ousley, began more than 20 years ago when he chaired the Race Scrutiny Group at Hackney Council, a group that I was a member of.  In more recent years, our paths crossed again when he became the Patron of Reach Society and I was representing RAFFA. He was so interested in the work that RAFFA was doing, demonstrating his commitment to the advancement of young people. His journey illustrates the vast imprint he has left on those he encountered. His professional demeanour, combined with a profound respect for every individual, will leave a lasting effect, inspiring countless others to pursue the vision he championed.

As we remember Lord Herman Ousley, let us celebrate a life lived in pursuit of fairness and dignity for all and honour his legacy by continuing the work he so passionately dedicated himself to. He leaves behind not just a legacy of substantial achievements but also a challenge to us all—to carry forward his vision of a more equal, inclusive society. His absence will be deeply felt, yet his accomplishments and the spirit he infused into every endeavour will continue to inspire future generations. Rest in peace, Lord Ousley.
