Krystal Campbell Aldred is a remarkable young woman whose compassion and determination transcended a cancelled travel plan, turning a missed opportunity into a meaningful act of service. Her story highlights resilience, community spirit, and the power of volunteering to make a tangible difference in crisis situations.

"I was overwhelmed with concern and compassion for Jamaica when I first heard news of the upcoming tragedy known as Hurricane Melissa. After it passed, I searched for different ways I could contribute towards Jamaica and the Jamaicans in need. Originally I discussed my initial wish of volunteering in Jamaica with RAFFA but due to difficulties brought by Melissa, it was deemed too soon and I decided to look for ways I could support from England instead, for the time being.

I found out about JLB Shipping and that I could not only donate but volunteer and help package up items being sent over. That sounded great because loads of money I may not have but God gave me a working body to get this work done, which was what I needed. I knew some people volunteering and working some I did not but that was irrelevant. We automatically became such a team; we helped each other, worked together, and felt as if we all transformed from “people” to one person.

When lifting or pushing, I wasn’t forced to carry anything beyond my ability and neither were any other women there. Everyone cared for my back and health which was a relief, as, despite being only 18 years old, according to my doctor, due to an injury, my back does not relate to my youth. There was food, drinks, gloves, needed facilities and friendly but determined faces.

However, I felt second-hand disappointment when certain people donating, provided things against Jamaica’s government’s rules and requests. I felt we had work to do, and things we shouldn’t have had to deal with. I hope people start getting the message.

I’m excited to return next week, as participating in assisting the Jamaicans felt so fulfilling and worthwhile."
